How Shade Sails Works

Because it's not held up with a frame, the design of the sail is crucial in that it needs curvy sides to tension, these curves are worked out at ±7% of the width of a side, so that when we start to tension it, the curves try to force its way outwards to tighten up the centre of the sail, curves are essential to avoid ending up with a sagging shade cloth look.

The poles are planted into the ground at a depth of around 700mm to 1000mm and are usually set at 75-degree angle, to ensure the base of the structure is solid and so that the pole don’t flex under the extreme tension of the shade material.

Not only do we custom make our shade sails locally but we also custom make our poles, using A grade mild steel with 4mm wall thicknesses that can take the forces needed to tension our shade structures, making sure we don’t compromise on quality.

The poles come standard with primer and final coat but we also offer our customers the peace of mind by adding powder coating to the poles in any colour imaginable, thus prolonging the lifespan of the poles.

The shade nets come standard in 3m rolls, so any canopy made bigger than 3m will have joins, but again to make sure the quality is up to standard and robust, we double stitch all our seams and joins with UV stabilized tread.
